The YMCA is committed to providing services beyond the classroom education, in order to help them identify and reach their goals. In addition to providing a travel allowance (bus fare for those living outside the immediate area), we have a range of other services that complement our programmes.
Each week a health nurse visits and meets with any students needing assistance with medical, dental, and optical issues. A counsellor is also available weekly to provide mental health and alcohol and drug help. They both help the students address issues that need attention, assist in referring for appointments, and provide a safe place for the students to advocate for their physical and mental health.
The student coordinator takes students to appointments, helps them prepare for more independence (budgeting, food shopping, communicating with others), & as they get closer to completing their education here—transition to the next step (whether that might be work or further education). In this way, we strive to prepare our students to become well-adjusted young adults in the community at the same time they are achieving their goals.
